It starts 300 million years ago and traces its geologic\, tectonic\, volcanic\, and hydrologic history to better understand how the region became what it is today. These natural processes are connected to the human story of the Salinas Valley\, including Indigenous land use\, settlement patterns\, labor history\, and the rise of large-scale agriculture. By integrating earth science with social context\, the presentation highlights how geology and water resources have directly influenced life in the region. \nAbout the Presenter \n  \nAlexis Mendez is an artist\, educator\, and organizer with a background in Popular Education and Place Based Learning. Their work focuses on making complex geologic and environmental concepts accessible by connecting them to local landscapes and lived experience. Alexis was born and raised in East Salinas where he began connecting social dilemmas to a historical timeline to answer his and the community’s problems. DESCRIPTION:Come learn more about beaver dam analogs and process-based restoration on the Central Coast! \nThis day-long workshop will be an educational and interactive experience into process-based restoration techniques\, geared for agencies\, local non-profits and community members.  This will be a hands-on introduction into the “how and why” of beaver dam analogs on the Central Coast. \nWhat To Expect: \n\nPresentations on process-based restoration (PBR)\, including permitting pathways\nGuided tour of an active restoration site on Walters Creek\nHands-on building and maintenance of beaver dam analogs and head cut erosion treatments\n\nParticipants will leave with a better understanding of what it takes to implement process-based restoration projects and the benefits of using this restoration method.  Heavy rain will cancel the hands-on portion of the workshop. \nThis workshop is held by San Luis Obispo Beaver Brigade and Nature’s Engineers. Funding for this project has been provided in part by the Morro Bay National Estuary Program. \n

In collaboration with Earth Shine and Athletic Brewing’s Two for the Trails project. \nThe trail is fully paved—however\, we will be straying from the trail to access any litter that has found its way into this lovely riparian woodland. This will also be a great opportunity to observe the restoration efforts made possible by the Upper Salinas-Las Tablas Resource Conservation District. \nMake sure to bring everything you need for a bright and active morning: water\, a hat\, solid footwear and some sunscreen. In collaboration with Earth Shine\, the City of Paso Robles and Athletic Brewing’s Two for the Trails project. Where to meet: 141 Niblick Rd\, Paso Robles\, CA 93446 \nThere is a fully paved river walkway—however\, we will be straying from the trail to access any litter that has found its way into this lovely riparian woodland. Make sure to bring everything you need for a bright and active morning: water\, a hat\, solid footwear and some sunscreen. DESCRIPTION:Join Us for an Invasive Species Creek Cleanup! \nSaturday\, October 3  8:00 AM–12:00 PM \nJoin the SLO Beaver Brigade\, Coastal San Luis Resource Conservation District\, and the City of Arroyo Grande for a morning of learning\, hands-on training\, and invasive species removal along Arroyo Grande Creek! \nWe’ll meet at Centennial Park near the swinging bridge at 200–298 Olohan Alley\, Arroyo Grande\, CA 93420. Parking is available\, and we’ll begin with a short training on how to safely identify and remove English ivy before heading into the creek corridor to put those skills into practice. \nWe’ll be working on and around trails\, trees\, and steep slopes\, so please come prepared for an active day outdoors. Please bring: \n\nWater\nHat or sun protection\nSunscreen\nSturdy\, closed-toe footwear\nWork gloves\, if you have them\n\nWork gloves will be provided for participants who need them. \nCome ready to learn\, get your hands dirty\, and help improve the health of Arroyo Grande Creek! \n*This event is weather dependent. Experts from partner organizations will share insights into the river’s history\, hydrology\, ecology\, and conservation. Participants will also learn about nature-based river management strategies that support climate adaptation and environmental justice. \nThis year’s Salinas River Day Celebration is a collaborative effort led by BASE Landscape Architecture\, in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Beaver Brigade\, Atascadero Mutual Water Company\, Upper Salinas-Las Tablas Resource Conservation District\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Pacific Southwest Regional Office – Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge\, Visionary Arts Studio\, and Monterey Waterkeeper.
